Been listening to Sunset Rubdown’s song Idiot Heart over here. I think I like it! Gonna check out the Clues record this weekend.

*Lyrics from Idiot heart. They’re available in full right here which is neat-o.

Patti Smith used to introduce “Redondo Beach” on-stage by announcing, “Redondo Beach is a beach where women love other women.” Whatever relationship such a statement may have to the actual shoreline city of Redondo Beach, a suburb of Los Angeles, it gives a lesbian context to the song’s story, which concerns a quarrel between two women leading to a suicide. The song’s narrator reveals that she is staying in a hotel where she has argued with the woman she addresses in the song who, she says, has then drowned herself.” – All Music

“Late afternoon, dreaming hotel
We just had the quarrel that sent you away.
I was looking for you, are you gone gone ?
Called you on the phone, another dimension.
Well, you never returned, oh you know what I mean.
I went looking for you, are you gone, gone ?

Down by the ocean it was so dismal,
Women all standing with a shock on their faces.
Sad description, oh I was looking for you.

Everyone was singing, girl is washed up
On redondo beach and everyone is so sad.
I was looking for you, are you gone gone ?
Pretty little girl, everyone cried.
She was the victim of sweet suicide.
I went looking for you, are you gone gone ?…”

OK, some of this video is ain’t so hot (like how hard is it to set up a coupla lights?). But we like Marnie’s answers which include some insight into how she developed her style, her inspiration for her album and some criticism she’s received. The whole thing isn’t in German, BTW. Enjoy!

Note: If you follow this blog, you might recall our road trip to see Marnie in May as well as our many blog posts featuring her videos and stuff. There aren’t many who inspire such fangirl-dom, but she is one who does!

Deep Sea Clothes Rack

July 8, 2009

Tina Kalivas, should we become lovers? I’ve never met another whose fashion inspiration is deep sea life forms.

Also, the background of our myspace page is a bit nuts because I accidentally erased all the coding we used to have. Tried to remedy it last night, does it look too nutso?

…Aaaaaand, this Lily Allen video is cute as hell. Erin could rock her look in a major way! Sorry for not posting the video here, the embedding is disabled by request.

Gosh, I love this image. Doesn’t it make you think of a vinyl record? Also, the collage-d bit at the top is awesome (right Erin?).

Our latest video for 52PickUpVideos (week 15)! Almost forgot to do this one. Super short: directed by NW, “camera” by Mike R., sound by Martin H.! Pssst…listen carfully; the soundtrack is a mash-up or something of Nightwood tunes. Or maybe just one tune. Surely someone will starighten me out in the comments section.

Pssst…do you or anyone you know happen to own/have access to a button/pin maker that maks 3″ (or larger) buttons? Please e-mail or comment if ya do! We will give you a bunch of free stuff if you’re able to give a band a hand!

Pear-fect!

Yep, that’s me (on the right) getting the f%ck outta the way at the Aids Wolf show at NXNE in a photo from the untold city.  Too bad there isn’t a photo of me using Amber as my shield from the mosh pit.  (Are they still called mosh pits?)

As you may know, I have never eaten a pear.  Since admitting this so-called atrocity, I’ve been presented with many a mediocre pear to try.  I just want the first time to be special!

It’s chilly outside, so defy your mom and put on the snazzy outfit that you’ve already picked out for your first day back to school and wear it here.  It could be glove weather!

Let’s pretend it’s summer-y outside and that we can wear all the next-to-nothing ridiculousness we want! We’re Montrealers, after all, and we wanna make up for months of wintery, indoor living.

This time lapse of our mastering session with Harris got cut short cuz our apparatus ran outta juice! That’s alright. We’ve got more than enough time lapse videos right over here. We’re just listening closely to what is pretty much the final version of the rekkid and thinking hard to see if any changes need to be made. But we’re loving it and cannot wait to send these songs out into the wide, wide world!

Pssst…check out the Cotton Mouth show this Saturday, OK?

Dancing With Myself!

July 2, 2009

I loooove dance, and So You Think You Can Dance is gearing up to be one hell of a season (Ade & Kayla, FTW!).  Some (A & J) will make fun of me for this, but I kinda wish that one day Nightwood will have a music video with choreographed dancing.  Sunken Mountains??  K, maybe not.

A year or so ago, Montreal-based musician Alden Penner (Clues) teamed up with filmmaker Brett Story to create a political film with lots of sweet tunes and street dance in order to best explore the plight of church-bound refugee Abdelkader Belaouni. It’s called The Visible Will vs. The Invisible Wall. So yeah, dance can be super powerful!

But here are some dance videos that are pretty cool.  There are so many, of course, so do share some and I’ll update the post!

(excuse the lame-ass lyrics all over the video… like anyone needs to be able to read “Wham! Bam!” along with the music…)

Thanks for friendly suggestions!

CINEMA! Yeah! So many of our buds are filmmakers and some Nightwood-ers are a part of the Double Negative Collective (a film collective). So it’s perhaps appropriate to bring film to zis blog from time-to-time.

The photo at the top was found on filmmaker Mike Rollo’s blog in this lovely entry. He has other excellent posts including one on Pablo Ferro and opening sequences in films and photos of public tranportation by Walker Evans.

* Cinema sounds? Dziga Vertov (Man With A Movie Camera) apparently changed his name to recall the sound of a projector running film.

Weekend in the Pines promises to be an exciting expanded cinema and music experience! It’s being described as projections & sonic levitiations and it’s happening at The Pines, a recording studio in the Griffintown part of Montreal (yay, the South-West!). Check out the Sunday night multi-projector performance by Bruce McClure- not to be missed!

Want some lo-culture? Check out our completely silly video that was cobbled from short clips we “shot” on the computer while in the backseat of the car during the drive back from NXNE. WARNING: This might be a complete waste of time; expect silliness and ridiculousness and computer F/X! This was submitted as part of our contributions to 52 Pick-Up (a video a week, baby)! Check out our other silly road trip video here.
