Like a ship in a bottle, Carta Marina is a carefully crafted rock album teeming with oceanic themes and nautical imagery.

CARTA MARINA is a ten-song album in the truest sense of the word: the release formats are exclusively 12” vinyl LP and digital download with songs that are thematically dense and laden with deep-sea imagery. Carta Marina features drums that thump, elliptical riffs that crash-land rather than end, fuzzy waves of guitar, and voices that call out to each other. Carta Marina’s songs are like sailors lying snug against each other below deck, whispering stories about life at sea, a bottle passed back and forth, adrift amidst oceanic rock and roll.

Proud Montrealers, Nightwood tapped into the city’s deep well of talent. The album’s artwork is courtesy of celebrated local painter Rick Leong, and the album features production by Martin Horn of Digital Bird Studios and Tyler Crawford (Reversing Falls).

Nightwood Big City E.P.

Big City EP CD (Grenadine Records) – Released May 13, 2008

Tracklisting:
1. Blind Assassin
2. The Bikeriders
3. The Hunger
4. Cave of the Spleen
5. Elephantine
6. Harvest

Long-time collaborators Erin Ross and Amber Goodwyn come together with recent addition “Famous” Eric Lapointe to deliver their first mini-album, Big City EP (GREN018) on Montreal indie label Grenadine Records. Recorded by Martin Horn at Digital Bird Studios, this 6-song album is tightly packed, music for the disenchanted. Nightwood takes its cues from Patti Smith, Nick Cave, Low, modern literature, porn and cinema (e.g. Night of the Hunter, The Hunger and First Blood).

In Big City EP, Nightwood creates songs with soft rhythmic beginnings and grows them in intensity, until they are lush and fully expanded sounds. These big and powerful rock songs are belied by the simplicity of the band’s minimal instrumentation. The doubling of clean guitars (Goodwyn on the Triple X, Ross on the Flying V), alongside Famous’ heavy drumming, lays the framework for the band’s unique and eerily intertwined vocal harmonies. Nightwood is storytelling made musical; they require no cheap frills in building the soundtrack for their various musical protagonists: a blind assassin, a blood lusting Catherine Deneuve, and bikerider Big Barbara. These are a few of the characters who find themselves on the wild ride that is Big City EP.
